P5 Dr Zoeteke Lugthart
‘P5′ is a well put together and from the very beginning it is apparent that this short was created by professionals. I like the beginning as we see an edited sequence of close-up’s (drip, light bulb and chains) establishing the location and building the audience up towards the next part of the film, also the enhanced sounds at this point intensify the audience’s desperation to see what happens next. Throughout the sound quality is high and keeps the audience engaged in-keeping with the on-screen images, intensified by the echo of the location in which the film is shot (a dark basement). The images portrayed grab the attention of the audience, of what they would least expect; to begin with the main character is thought to be a young boy with a bag of ‘something’ later to find out it is a young girl with pieces of a gun she then fits together. This is quite disturbing as young children and guns do not mix, particularly as it is real and not a toy, also when we find out it is a girl this becomes a more serious matter – going against the ‘normal’ of stereotypes depicting that a young girl who would stereotypically play with dolls plays with a gun which a grown woman would not even know how to use. The camera work during the film is also inspiring, the camera never stops moving between longer shots constantly keeping the audience engaged and revealing a sense of instability. The shots escalate as the time between cuts shorten, increasing the build up in joining the gun together, heightening the use of the final shot (a medium close-up of the girl staring into the camera directly at the audience), giving the audience chance to think why she would have the gun in the first place.
